All media relations for Houston Public Works are managed exclusively by the Mayor’s Office of Communications. To ensure consistent, accurate messaging and alignment with department policy, all interactions with the media must be routed through the Mayor’s Office of Communications.

Required Media Procedures

Do not respond directly to reporters, provide statements, or agree to interviews. Follow these essential directives when dealing with the media:

  • Notify Supervisor: Immediately inform your supervisor of any media contact. The supervisor will escalate the request to the Mayor's Office of Communications.
  • No Unauthorized Statements: Do not provide statements unless expressly cleared by the HPW Director and the Mayor's Office of Communications.
  • Handle On-Site Visitors: If media arrives at a facility or work zone, direct them to a safe area. Immediately contact a supervisor and the Mayor’s Office of Communications for guidance.
  • Provide Timely Information: When the Mayor's Office of Communications requests data from you, provide it promptly or advise if more time is needed to gather it.
